AGE/BIRTHDATE: 16 / 8th of February
BLOOD STATUS: pureblood
YEAR/OCCUPATION: sixth year
FACE CLAIM: Sabrina Carpenter
A lot of people have called Ilse vain and self-centered throughout her life because she's very particular with her appearance, but in Ilse's frank opinion... those people are completely clueless about just how much looks play apart in the way you are perceived by others in your everyday life. Or perhaps those people are aware and, in which case, they're deserve an avada kedavra just for having the gall of being an eyesore to everybody in a 2km radius.
To be 100% honest, Ilse's personality can come across as strong a lot of the times and she's completely unapologetic about it. She's very ambitious and she knows what she wants, and she's not afraid to go after it - this is a quality that her parents have encouraged to a degree, thinking she'd mellow out eventually and play second fiddle to her brother or her future husband but... the chances of that ever happening are slim.
Ilse likes to be in control at all times and the prospect of letting someone else - regardless of gender - take ahold of the broomstick doesn't suit her. Even if she's not allowed to visibly appear to be in control, you best believe that she's behind the scenes and manipulating people into letting her get her way. A lot of her controlling nature stems from the fact that Ilse's very aware that in her family, she's just a puppet suspended on strings, moving whenever they want her to.
Ilse's family's large control of her life has encouraged other issues to present themselves too because even though she likes to be in control, she often does feel powerless about her destiny. She can't go against her family and defy generations of Askanier family history, she can't become that dark mark that ruins their lineage. She's too prideful and her family really does mean everything to her. One of the issues is an undiagnosed eating disorder because if there's one thing she definitely can control, it's her body - and she does this by heavy food restriction.
It's important to note that Ilse is a very intelligent young woman, and she has been since she was a girl. A lot of it is natural intelligence, but Ilse's ambitious personality often leads her down the route of studying almost excessively especially come exam time. She needs to be the best, to be in the top 1% of her class at all times, and there's times she overdoes it. More than once, Jakob has had to dose her drink to get her to sleep.
When Lina Askanier found she was pregnant at the tender age of 25, she was overjoyed. It was everything that she ever wanted and she just prayed she was carrying a boy to carry on the elite pureblood dynasty her husband's family had worked so hard to build. When the healer said to her during her scan, 'Congratulations, it's a boy,' Lina was all smiles. But then when the healer paused, a sense of dread washed over her. What was wrong? Lina would soon find out as the healer added on with a nervous smile, 'and a girl. You're expecting twins!' The dread quickly faded but Lina nearly died on the spot from shock because twins didn't run in either Hans' or her own family. The news was completely unexpected, and when she glanced up at Hans, he patted her shoulder reassuringly and said, "We'll get a house elf who has practice with twins," and that was that.
Ilse and Jakob were born in early February, and even though her parents were likely wanting Jakob to be delivered first, that wasn't the case. Ilse pushed her way through, practically defying the notion that 'men come first' in pureblood society, just by entering the world.
Ilse's early years were very similar to those of her pureblood peers. She and Jakob were expected to excel, to learn music at any early age, to be well-behaved... and Ilse was. She was excellent at following the rules because she wanted to receive praise from her parents who's eyes always seemed to be trained on Jakob even though he was a lot meeker than her.
When Ilse was five, however, disaster struck and she was summoned to join her parents for breakfast. They were both wearing solemn expressions and as Ilse looked around, she wondered where Jakob was. Her parents never ate breakfast with them to begin with... but where was her brother? It was odd and when Ilse asked, her parents shared a look with each other. Their answer sounded... rehearsed, when they told her, 'He's come down with a case of dragonpox, Ilse. He'll be fine. He just needs to be in the hospital for a while. When he's better, he'll come home.'
True to their word, Jakob did come home but... he wasn't the same. He wasn't her meek, quiet little brother Jakob anymore. He was loud, throwing tantrums often. He clung to their mother's leg which Jakob knew wasn't acceptable, and Ilse never would have dared to do. He'd developed a deathly fear of the bath, where Jakob before he got sick loved to dunk his head under the water and pretend he was diving to see mermaids. It was odd and Ilse knew something was off, but... she didn't question it. He still looked like Jakob, after all, even if he didn't act like him.
It was around three years later when Ilse was eight that her mother's attitude started to change. At first, it was little things - Lina would snap at them over the tiniest of inconveniences like leaving their quills in the ink, or having a book sitting on the table. But as time went on, she seemed to hone in on Jakob especially, picking on the most minute of things like his shoelace not being tied correctly. Then things took a bit of a turn - instead of sticking to her one customary glass of wine at their family dinner, Lina would drink two, sometimes three, much to Hans' apparent disapproval. She would claim she felt stressed and needed to relax. One morning, Ilse woke early and caught Gunhilde the house elf emptying out the trash which clattered with glass bottles, far more than just the one her mother would drink over two days. It was clear that her mother had a problem, something she could even recognise at a young age, and from there, it really just spiraled out of control.
By the time Ilse commenced Durmstrang, things at home were rough. Her parents previously cordial marriage was tumultuous between her mother's drinking and her father's penchant for mistresses. Ilse was meant to be oblivious to the latter but how could one not be aware if it was mentioned in every screaming match they got into? Ilse was thrilled to be in a school environment - not only because of the distraction it provided her with, but because it gave her a chance to prove herself. She wanted to uphold the Askanier reputation, to show everyone that she was the product of perfection - even if her real life wasn't quite like that.
Now that she's in sixth year, Ilse has noticed a lot of changes around her... even more than in fifth year. Her classmates are seemingly going crazy, not being able to stop themselves from throwing themselves at each other, something she finds... well, disgraceful, especially considering half of them are in arranged marriages. She doesn't understand why they're acting like this because she's just found out she's betrothed to a boy in seventh year, Ingvar Winterfeldt and even though he's objectively handsome, the desire to be romantic with him isn't there.
